Final Blog Post

This Friday, May 22, your Norton High Lancers Tennis Boys faced off against the Hopkinton Hillers. In this inner Tri Valley League match the Lancers received another loss at the hands of the Hillers losing 0-5 in the match. After being outplayed and over-matched the Lancers fell to 2-15 on the year as a whole. Although, the Lancers had little to celebrate in the match; they were celebrating their senior night.

Coming into the match the Lancers were over-powered as they met early resulting in an 1-4 loss in Hopkinton. The Hopkinton Hillers have had a very successful season when compared to the Lancers. Norton coach Katelyn Green stressed the importance of "setting small goals" in hopes to improve the play heading into this almost David vs Goliath match. Last match senior captain Brandon Jenkins battled Ryan Mastroieni in an epic 3 set victory in becoming the Lancers only victor of the day. Friday's match would prove to be much different as everyone received losses across the board. Norton High's No.2 doubles team battled in a close first set, but unable to pull through lost 6-7.First Alternate Liam Lenhart moving up and playing at No.3 singles on the day was able pull away with 5 games against Luke Whitehouse of the Hopkiton Hillers.

Liam Lenhart 6-1, 6-4; Andrew Xu-John Healiff (H) def. Robbie Douglas-Sean Murphy 6-1, 6-1; Will Nadeau-Chris Stattlefield (H) def. Derek Kalnicki-John Munger 7-6, 6-0.

The Lancers have had a rough season, but were hoping their home-court advantage would be enough to rally the troops to a victory. As, the Lancers did receive an extra audience for senior night including some of their fellow Norton High students shown here. The Lancers are saying good bye to eight senior players this season, and even went with an all senior lineup against Hopkinton. As the future of Norton Tennis remains in question with the amount of graduating seniors and lack of participation. The Lancers did seem to show a lack of hope knowing that they were heading up against a better and more experienced opponent.

Even though the Lancers fell to the Hillers in an 0-5 defeat they showed heart as they hustled on the courts. The Lancers were outmatched and lacked in experience compared to the Hillers, but they were able to compete with their hustle on every point. Although there was celebration due to senior night, most of the lancers fought hard to give the crowd something to cheer about. As Liam Lenhart was quoted, "It was a bar fight out there, we had to fight our tails off for every point." The loss didn't stick well for Liam or any of his teammates, but he was quoted "we fought hard out their, and that's what makes us champions at heart." Seniors Sean Murphy and Robbie Douglas experienced a tough 1-6 1-6 loss. There was some disputes in the tough loss as Sean Murphy claimed he could've won the match all by himself.  The Lancers played their game and played well, but still did not have enough to beat the Hillers. Some of the results were disappointing, but moving forward they hope to improve.

The Hopkinton Hillers played one of their best matches all year with great serve and volley play. The Hillers were able to take advantages of positioning by the lancers with excellent volleys. The general power of their serves helped them get an advantage over their opponent along with superb net play. The winners and aces that accumulated were too much to overcome and help lead the Hillers to a season sweep off the Lancers.

Norton Tennis player Brandon Jenkins hopes to keep his tournament hopes alive as he currently sits with a 8-9 record just needing one victory to qualify for the tournament. After earlier defeating Ryan Mastroieni there was hope that he would clinch tournament berth Friday. However, with a disappointing match he fell 0-6 2-6 to Mastroieni, Jenkins faces one more opportunity to clinch berth at Ashland. Jenkins feels confident he can as unlike the Hopkinton match earlier in the year he was able to defeat Ashland's No.1 singles player, Dan Kamerin, in two quick sets.

The Lancers are concluding their season Tuesday May 26th with an away match against the Ashland Clockers. This match is a focus point for the Lancers as they almost pulled away with a victory against them earlier in the season.

Blog Post #9

Deflate-gate is a rising conflict coming up recently in the NFL involving the New England Patriots. The problem is that eleven of the twelve Patriots footballs that they supplied were below the regulated 12.5 psi requirement and for most footballs under by only a notch. The incident occurred during the AFC Conference Championship Game where the New England Patriots routed the Indianapolis Colts 45-7. The deflation of footballs is only a very minimal advantage if even an advantage. The supposed advantages are widely exaggerated and made-up. There is but only circumstantial evidence that links quarterback Thomas Patrick Brady to the deflation of footballs. The evidence presented that accuses Brady would not stand up in the court of law and is been compared to a witch hunt.

Ted Wells compiled a 243 page report accusing Tom Brady of being guilty of knowing about the deflation of footballs. The report was very faulty in logic as it demands for a brash penalty against the Patriots when there is only circumstantial evidence. Most of the evidence can be turned around and is not hard concrete evidence. The report already has bias as Ted Wells has already been known to have a dislike towards quarterback Tom Brady. After a recent interview, Ted Wells exploded in an outrage due to the fact that many people were questioning the legitimacy of the report. I believe this evidence is not enough to come to the conclusion that Brady did do the crime; I am not saying Brady did not know about it if the deflation was on purpose I am only saying if the NFL is going to make a ruling on this matter they must have hard evidence clearly linking Brady and the Patriots to purposely deflating the footballs.

The NFL issued a four game suspension to Brady a one million dollar fine and the loss of two draft picks to the New England Patriots. Roger Goodell issued the ruling and now has named himself the unbiased arbitrator in the ruling of the appeal. I disagree with the severity of this ruling as I would not take away two draft picks and issue a four game suspension off of accusations and circumstantial evidence. The deflation of footballs is not even a serious issue and is much less than all the recent issues among the NFL. I believe the Dallas Cowboys should be under much more scrutiny right now as they have signed Greg Hardy recently convicted of child abuse, domestic violence, and has had a deep criminal history before. The Cowboys also signed L’ael Collins who is involved in an ongoing murder investigation and drafted Randy Gregory who fell in the draft due to his criminal record and off the field issues. The Cowboys are also one of the teams interested in Ray Rice or Adrian Peterson. The NFL ruling on Brady when in perspective to the way they are handling domestic violence is far more harsh.

If I was in charge, I would only issue a hefty fine as of now with the evidence collected. The investigation should keep going on and if there is concrete evidence than I would make a ruling of a suspension of Brady for 2 games and a loss of a 4th round draft pick. The problem aligns with the explanation provided by physics in the Ideal Gas Law which could offer an explanation given to why the balls were deflated due to weather condition. I would continue to review this situation and see how it progresses over time.

Summary:
The Short Game by Josh Greenbaum is a sports documentary that focuses on the 7 and 8 US Golf World Championship. The film focuses on eight particular diverse entrants and their development throughout the tournament. Allan Kournikova, Zama Nxasana, Kuang Yang, Alexa Pano, Jed Dy, Amari Avery, Sky Sudberry, and Augustin Valerie were the diverse group of golfers focused on this film. The film showed the importance that golf had in their lives as it gave them many life lessons like a determined demeanor. The film does raise many questions about these kids like, "Are these kids wasting their childhood?" "How does all this pressure affect these kids later in life?" The director uses many strategies to emphasize the gravitas of this tournament with music and montages. Their may be reason to believe that their is some bias present as this golf film is produced from a person who enjoys the game of golf.

Analysis:

The director used many strategies and tools to emphasize the significance of this tournament. Montages were used to show the excitement of the championship with upbeat music the viewer was captivated by the thrill. Pathos was used throughout the film as it showed these kids, like a typical 7 or 8 year old would, acting silly and naive. It was also heartbreaking to see Jed Dy, aka the Jedi Master who also suffered from autism, be knocked out of contention with the 10-stroke penalty. The film maker made the viewer emotionally attached to these kids and to see them being filled with despair really hurt, but the viewer was jovial when the kids were excited from their success.

Rhetorical Precis:
Josh Greenbaum's sports documentary, The Short Game (2012), he shows the exploitation that golf has on children in this tournament and displays valuable life lessons they learn. The narrator first introduces the eight entrants in this golf tournament. He then shows their play through the three-day tournament. His purpose is to show some of the best young golfers in the world and show the effects that competitive golf has on kids of such a young age. His audience is parents, children and fans of golf.

Blog Post #7

In Trevor Martin's, documentary $chooled--The Price of College Sports he exposes the NCAA of unjust treatment of their athletes. The author first depicts the electric college atmosphere with fast-motion and slow-motion clips to emphasize the atmosphere. The NCAA showed unjust treatment towards their athletes as they exploit them. The NCAA make billions of dollars in revenue off of these athletes, but refuses to compensate them. The author also used sympathy towards two individuals Devon Ramsay and Kent Waldrep which showed two cases of extreme injustice. His purpose was to sway the opinion of the public into making them for college athletes getting compensation. He seems to gave the young audience in my mind as he shows the nonsensical responses by the "old white dudes" who run everything. I believe what the NCAA did was wrong and they should compensate their athletes. Previously I had held the same opinion just because of the sheer numbers in the profit the NCAA is making.

The documentary $chooled--The Price of College Sports they make the argument as to why college athletes should get paid. The Schools are generating billions of dollars off these athletes. The NCAA has many strict rules which gives the athletes little to no rights. The athlete could break a violation with out even knowing and lose eligibility to play. This is shown when Devon Ramsay was "set up" by the NCAA and lost his eligibility. This example showed that many times the NCAA doesn't care about the case they just mark it as a violation so they can make a certain quota. This documentary limits bias as it covers both sides of the argument and disproves counterarguments. This documentary is very thorough in its argument as to why college athletes should receive compensation. The NCAA a nonprofit organization has exposed its athletes multiple times. Kent Waldrep a TCU running-back was another example of the injustice of the NCAA. Waldrep was paralyzed in freak play causing him to never walk again. TCU refused to pay his medical bills and dropped his scholarship. The documentary goes into detail of how the scandal was handled and how the made up term student-athlete came into play.

The Green Generation
This documentary will depict the turn around of Norton High's Tennis team. After the first year coach Mr. Langmead coached the team to 2-16 season. The players bounded together to come to an agreement of a coaching change. After, the firing of Mr. Langmead the team was able to reel in Katelyn Green. The team already had the core pieces bound to make a deep run in the tournament, but the coaching was just not there before. With the new coach, the expectations for this season are at an all time high. When Katelyn Green was asked what she could bring to this team she was quoted, "I don't know anything about tennis." As you can see  the new coach has a lot to bring to the table and it looks to be all on the players to bring this team to success. This year the Tennis team is facing a championship or bust scenario.

Blog post #5 News Writing

Last Night, Norton's own Adam Winarz defeated Shooter McGavin  in the 2019 Pro Golf Tour Championship in the final hole. In a miraculous finish Adam Winarz was forced to putt the ball through the viewing tower to clinch  the championship and get the famous gold jacket.

Image of Shooter McGavin after the tournament clinching putt by Winarz
Adam Winarz was battling back from a large deficit and finally overcame it by finding his happy place. The championship became an instant classic as the underdog Adam Winarz was able to defeat the highly favored Shooter McGavin.

Adam Winarz was upset that the match had been that close. At hole 17 Winarz missed a putt dropping him to a triple bogey that round. He was seen yelling at his ball, "Why don't you just go HOME? That's your HOME! Are you too good for your HOME? ANSWER ME!"

Shooter McGavin was quite upset with the loud rambunctious crowd following Winarz. As he was pleading the refs to quiet the crowd he even went so far as comparing it to a rock concert. He stated "Damn you people. This is golf. Not a rock concert."

At the end of the day Adam Winarz couldn't believe he had won the gold jacket forever cementing his legacy as a golf great. He was very blithe after the tournament and shouted "Anything Is Possible" This looks to be the start of a great golf career for Winarz. On the other end, it seems as if Shooter McGavin has cemented a legacy of his own for being a notorious "choke artist".

Sports Impact on our Culture

Professional sports bring down cultural and racial barriers. In sports there is no black and white; one is not based upon their religion or nationality. Players are only based on skill and character. Often times we see disputes between nationalities put aside with sports. Sports have a special way of bringing us together as people. Many times sports have impacted history, as Jackie Robinson broke down the race barrier in baseball which help transcend society and start a movement towards the end of segregation in America.
Sports still play a pivotal role in society today. As these sports team are representitve of their respective cities, with teams such as the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots representing the hard working class of their cities. Sports can rally a nation together as it puts all eyes on the Olympics and the World Cup. Sometimes there are miracles in sports that give us faith and hope in life. Such as the 1980 US olympic men's hockey team defeating the seemingly unbeatable Russian team. These miracles in sports do not happen often, but when they do it is something truly spectacular.

Sports are especially important to our youth. The first thing they teach their youth about sports is sportsmanship. Sports teach children many valuable lessons such as respect, hard work, focus, modesty, and etc. Your teamates in sports are often times your closest friends. For a young kid it can be very hard making new friends and sports are a great way to do that. Kids grow up idolizing sport figures such as Tom Brady. In Brady's case it may be considered benficial as he is a nice guy and does charity work. However, there are some sports figures like A-Rod and Mike Tyson who can lead a kid to do the wrong choices. Sometimes we hold our athletes above the.law and condone very negative behaviors. This can lead.to.many problems.as kids who grow up idolizing these men may believe it is ok do break the law. Sports has many influences on our youth and our society.

GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME

Tom Brady has cemented his legacy as the greatest of all-time as he led the Patriots from a double digit deficit in the fourth quarter against one of the greatest defenses in the history of the NFL. This game had one of the most exciting finishes of all time with extreme highs and lows. It felt for a moment that a third Superbowl would be ripped away from the Patriots on a unbelievable play. The odds that David Tyree makes that catch, Jermaine Kearse somehow catches that pass, and Eli Manning throw a perfect pass are so slim you could play those games a million times and never get that to happen again. After the Jermaine Kearse catch every Pats fan was in awe of the extreme bad luck the Patriots have experienced. But then the Superbowl ended in the greatest way as the undrafted rookie out of West-Alabama picked off Russell Wilson sealing the Pats fourth Superbowl in 14 years.

Villains In Sports

In sports many times the media portrays teams as the good guys and the bad guys. Recently the New England Patriots were subject to this. ESPN was presenting leaked out rumors as facts to villainize the Patriots. These rumors had some effect as the view of unintelligent sport followers deemed them as cheaters, but anyone who actually read the full story will understand that Deflate-gate was a non-story brewed up by the media just trying to take the Pats down. In many cases villains in sports are greatly exaggerated by the media. The loyal fans of these so called villains love their teams. The notorious Bad Boys from the late great Detroit Pistons teams were portrayed very negatively by the media. But these "villains" had some of the best fans in sports. When the "villains" come out on top in makes the victory so much sweeter.

ROB GRONKOWSKI WILL THROW KAM CHANCELLOR OUT OF THE CLUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The general argument made by the associated press is that the Superbowl will show a great match-up as it will pit Rob Gronkowski, tight-end for the New England Patriots, against Kam Chancellor, strong safety from the Seattle Seahawks. They write that Pats' tight end and Seattle safety is a marquee match. The associated press says that this match up will be a focus point to watch in this years Superbowl. The article pits Gronk and Chancellor are equal. However, I beg to differ.

Kam Chancellor is without a doubt one of the best players at his position.  Kam Chancellor is a safety with a linebacker build and cornerback speed and who his perhaps one of the best players to match up against Rob Gronkowski. I do agree with this however there is not one player in the league that could stop Gronk. If the Seahawks want to take out Gronk they will need to double team him all game. Rob Gronkowski already has 54 touchdowns since entering the leagues in 2011. Not only does he hold these record numbers Gronk has achieved them when battling through injuries. It seems as if Gronk could score on any play he wanted to. (see clip for evidence)

Superbowl Predictions

Superbowl XLIX is just two days away and it features a battle of 1 seeds as the New England Patriots face off against the Seattle Seahawks. The Superbowl has now become one of the biggest events in America and this year the match-up will not disappoint. As Tom Brady pursues his fourth Lombardi Trophy he will be attempting to defeat the reigning Superbowl champs the Seattle Seahawks. Now here are my unbiased expert predictions for the big game.

Final Score: Patriots Victory 45-3

I believe Brady will walk away with his fourth Superbowl in six appearances. The Patriots will have so much going for them which will prove to be too much for the cocky Seahawks. The Patriots have proven time and time again that they can overcome adversity. As after the 41-14 defeat many annalists claimed the Patriots Reign of success was over. The next week the Patriots responded in a 43-17 rout of the undefeated Bengals. The Patriots would finish out the year with the best record in the NFL. Once again we see the media against the Pats in these previous weeks. Now they have given the Patriots an "us against the world mentality".

Superbowl XLIX MVP: Bryan Stork

This man is the heart and soul of our offensive line. Stork looks to end his rookie season as Superbowl Champion. Attempting to return from the injury he received against the Ravens. Bryan Stork will look to be one of few to go from BCS bowl champs to Superbowl Champs. My real MVP is Jaime Collins the dude is a beast. expect BIG things from Collins.

What Is A Sport?

My definition of a sport is a competitive athletic event where one is pitted head to head or team vs team. Many sports fall under this category, but there are some grey areas. The grey areas that I would not necessarily consider a sport are:
Bowling
Dancing
Lawn games
Bull riding
Etc.

I guess what separates these from sports is there is a lack of competitiveness and athleticism. These can be considered sports, but I just do not believe they are sports. These items listed just lack the competitiveness to be considered a sport. There is also a lack of athleticism in lawn games and other minor athletic games.

Internet Usage and Adolescents

Problem Statement

I will be researching internet usage and its effects on adolescents. I am very interested to see what if any effect the increased amount of internet usage that this generation has experienced.

Literature Review Question

What effect does the amount of internet usage that this generation experiences have on their development?

Literature Review

 Internet Usage and Adolescents

Adolescent’s over usage of the internet has proven to be much more detrimental than beneficial. The emergence of the internet has led to many mental and physical defects. Social media is a major component of the internet that has led to a plethora of social problems such as cyberbullying. It appears the best way to solve the problem at hand is to limit the internet usage of adolescents. Although, the internet poses many problems, there can be great benefits in using the internet. The internet can be used as an educational mechanism to increase efficiency in a working environment.  The use of the internet can be a very useful tool but at the same time could have an adverse effect on adolescents.
With the emergence of the internet there has also been a development of social media and online interaction. Social media has affected a majority of adolescents in America. Nearly 81% percent of teens in America use some type of social media according to Linda Jackson’s book, Adolescents and the Internet, where she explains the effects that the internet can have on adolescents. Social media has proven to be a major part of a young adult’s life and looks like it is a trend to continue.
Teenagers spend huge amounts of time on the internet and media. (Strasburg as well as figure 1) But these adolescents must be wary of the harmful effects that social media is capable of. Effects such as cyberbullying, sexting, online pornography, “Facebook depression”, instant gratification, and the list goes on.
Social media has brought forth a new and very complicated problem in cyberbullying. Cyberbullying causes psychological, emotional, and physical stress for adolescents that are on the receiving end.  Many accounts of school violence have been linked to cyberbullying, with instances including fights and even school shootings. (Will) This comes from an account that is very popular in bullying statistics and there effect. Amanda Lenhart conducted a survey and it reported that of the 12-17 year old teens surveyed 94% of teens go online, 89% of online teens go online from home, 77% go online at school, 71% go online from a friend or relative's house, and 63% of online teens go online daily. (Lenhart) These numbers are very startling to see how much of an impact internet and social media have on adolescents. Also reported from the survey was that 85% of teens had experienced some form of cyberbullying. The alarming fact that 75% of 12-17 year olds have come in contact with cyberbullying should raise gargantuan red flags. Cyberbullying can lead to numerous many detrimental effects but yet there is little done to deter these adolescents from cyberbullying. Cyberbullying has led to suicide as it was concluded in a study that 7% of the 89% of teens that use the internet have attempted suicide. (Will) The lives of children are being lost due to the effects of cyberbullying.

The most effective way to reduce these tragedies from occurring is to limit internet usage among adolescents.
The emergence of the internet has led to increased exposure to violence among adolescents. There has been an extreme amounts of exposure of mature content to adolescents in recent years. New studies are coming out every day linking aggressive behavior directly to the exposure in media violence and exposure to mature content during youth years. (Park) Recent school shootings and acts of violence in schools have been linked to exposure to media violence. (Will) With the large amount of internet usage of adolescents, a substantial portion of that is mature content and media violence. Most recently the tragic events that occurred at Sandy Hook have been most notably linked to violent video games. (Smith) The tragic event shows to be a reminder of the extremely harmful mental and psychological effects violent video games can inflict on people. Yet another reason to limit the usage of internet among adolescents is the mature content and media violence impacts.
With the rise of the internet and social media sites there are many new challenges to face. Facebook Depression is a new term used by many researchers to describe the negative social effects that social media websites can produce such as depression. (O’Keefe) Many of these adolescents are getting so caught up in social media that they are allowing it to have a major physiological impact on their lives. A direct cause from social media websites is narcissism as these adolescents are getting too caught up in their image.  “I might see all of my friends hanging out the night before and wonder why I wasn’t invited and feel extremely lonely about that.” (Dockterman) Dockterman explains the phenomenon of Facebook depression and how social media makes many adolescents lonely and depressed. Overuse of Facebook and other social media sites a significantly correlated with narcissism, Histrionic Personality Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and Sadistic, Passive-Aggressive, Borderline, Paranoid, and Somatoform Personality Disorders. (Taylor) Overuse of social media websites are associated with all of these mental and social disorders that prove to have a detrimental effect to adolescents.
Adolescents’ use of the internet has led to exposure to mature content such as online pornography and sexting. In recent studies done by Amanda Lenhart for PEW research found that 15% of cell owning teens 12-17 in age have received sexually suggestive texts. (Lenhart) Exposure to mature content is alarming at an age as low as 12. This exposure can lead young adolescents to pursue a sexually active lifestyle at too young of an age. Typically these young adolescents are not taught the harmful effects of unprotected sex. Amanda Lenhart shows studies that show there is an association between internet usage and media exposure to sexting and online pornography. Mature content in an early adolescent life can lead to very harmful effects later on in life.
The massive increase of internet usage and social media has led to many impersonal relationships. It is more common nowadays for children to be on their phones during family dinners. There is an obsession with our smartphones has not only changed the way we spend time, but the way we feel and think. (Qtd. in Dockterman, Stolz) We connect these insignificant messages so much to our self-worth. (Dockterman) Adolescents have allowed social media to have so much of impact on their lives and the way they think. These adolescents are constantly chasing the idea that something is cool. (Generation Like) When kids think that that a product is cool they tend to all ride the bandwagon and get the product. In recent years the obsession with technology has led teens to be unsocial. Adolescents are becoming less and less social with the development of technology and social media. Now more than ever teenagers are more aloof and socially awkward than ever before. We can link this behavior to the emergence of social media sites and increasing amount of technology used by adolescents in an average day see Figure 1.
Instant gratification is the desire to experience pleasure or fulfillment without delay. (Patel) This concept has arose with social media and now poses a threat to many adolescents. Many kids post on social media websites to get immediate likes to boost their self-confidence. (Generation Like) Although this appears to be a positive effect there is another side for those who don’t receive likes which could perhaps lower their self-confidence. Instant gratification and the desire to get immediate pleasure is plaguing this generation with a numerous amount harmful effects. Nowadays it is very rare to see an adolescent working on something that does not have an immediate payout. Instant gratification is just one of many harmful effects that comes with the massive amount of media and technology use by adolescents.
Social Media has been the root cause of many problems that have arisen with the usage of the internet. Social media can link friends to each other and allows us to communicate in a way never before seen. However, there can be so many negative effects that come with the usage of social media. Social media is a direct link to Facebook
Depression, Cyberbullying, sexting, violence, and many other negative social and mental effects on adolescents. Psychological issues have also arose right alongside the emergence of social media usage.
Not only does the internet cause a plethora of social problems, but there have been a vast amount of mental and physical effects linked to the internet. Studies have shown to link internet usage to sleep deprivation, knowledge gaps, and ADHD. (Jackson) Some mental and psychological effects from the internet prove to be extremely harmful to adolescents. ADHD has been diagnosed to 6.4 million children ages 4-17 and that number has increased 5% per year since 2003. (Statistics) These numbers have been linked to the internet and usage among these children.
Knowledge gaps have become more and more common and larger in this new generation. Due to search engines many adolescents have not retained common knowledge. If they do not know something the first thing they go to is google. Google reports there are 1.17 billion users. (Google) Mark Bauerlein claims search engines and the internet have made this generation incompetent and their lack of retention of  common knowledge has led him to claim the new generation as the dumbest generation. (Bauerlein) Knowledge gaps are not the only problem with the internet and search engines. As search engines also alter the way we think. Patricia Greenfield, a developmental psychologist who runs UCLA’s Children’s Digital Media Center, reviewed dozens of studies on how different media technologies influence our cognitive abilities. Some of the studies indicated that certain computer tasks, like playing video games, increase the speed at which people can shift their focus among icons and other images on screens. Other studies, however, found that such rapid shifts in focus, even if performed adeptly, result in less rigorous and “more automatic” thinking. (Carr) The more and more we let the internet the less and less we are able to generate innovative and creative thoughts. The more “automatic thinking” we possess will lead to the inability to think outside of the box. The internet has changed the way we think and if we allow it, the internet could very well alter the way of thinking forever.

A very important part of adolescent lifestyle is the amount of sleep. The loss of sleep can cause an enormous amount of mental and physical problems. The use of internet has been directly correlated with the loss of sleep for adolescents. The use of TV or computers before going to sleep can delay sleep for up to two hours. (Hatfield) Around the world children get an hour less of sleep than they used to get. (Bronson) Bronson has completed many studies claiming the lost hour of sleep causes a 7 point drop in an IQ test, ADHD, and obesity. Internet usage has been proven to lead to sleep deprivation in adolescents. (Jackson) Sleep deprivation is very harmful for all people but to the development in adolescents it can cause many negative effects. We must be extremely wary of the harms as it could be truly detrimental to the development of our youth. Sleep is extremely essential for the developments of adolescents.

ADHD and many other of mental diagnosis are derived from the internet. With the rapid use of the internet that has emerged especially in the early 2000s has brought ADHD along with it. As ADHD has been diagnosed to 6.4 million children ages 4-17 and that number has increased 5% per year since 2003. (Statistics) ADHD is the lack of ability to retain focus. Many children (including my brother Ben) are prescribed Adderall for their mental diagnosis, whether it be ADHD or one of many other mental defects. Adderall has many side effects and if a children were to overdose it very well could be fatal. (Drugs.com) Adderall can stimulate growth of adolescents and could harm adolescence development. There have been many stimulation that many children nowadays are misdiagnosed with “made up” mental disorders. However, there have been many studies that show proof that the over usage of the internet leads to many mental disorders and lessens cognitive abilities. Internet usage affects perhaps the most important part to adolescence development with the loss of sleep.

Internet and its usage can be extremely harmful to adolescents. There are a vast abundance of mental disorders linked to its usage. Sleep deprivation is another cause from the overuse of the internet. The internet’s search engines have led to many knowledge gaps in adolescents. There should be a limit on the use of the internet among adolescents to deter these effects from occurring.

The internet has led to new and better opportunities for the vast majority. The internet can be a great educational tool which is used in millions of schools across America. The internet allows over a billion people to connect and communicate. There are so many great things that can come from the usage of the internet. Independent studies are know better than they have ever been with the help of the internet.
The internet and new technology has led to quicker and enhanced results. The internet is a great tool that increases the efficiency of a great amount of work and enhances the content of that work. The new technological world of today has led to so many new opportunities in work and for more of an efficient working environment. The majority of jobs in America use the internet in their working environment. All of these new technological advances increase the lifestyle of Americans. Adolescents’ use of the internet can help them educate themselves and increase their knowledge to never before seen lengths. The great things the internet offer us are evident and must be taken advantage of.
Educational use in the internet for adolescents prove to be great feats. The internet and new technology has increased the efficiency of the classroom environment and now almost all classrooms are using the new technology to increase productivity. The use of the internet has led to a curriculum that is in respect to all type of learners. In my life every single classroom I go to has a smart board and the use of computers is essential in most classes. Many colleges are online which changes a great deal of things. The internet provides great opportunities in the world of education.

Although the internet ruins some relationships, the internet can help shy adolescents express themselves and conquer their social fears. Personally, I tend to say many things that perhaps I would not say in person on the internet. Many kids feel safer and make new friends with the assistance of the internet. (O’Keeffe) I disagree with the ideas of Bauerlein that the internet makes my generation the dumbest generation.
Although there may be more knowledge gaps nowadays, knowledge is at the bottom of the totem pole for the hierarchy of thinking. I also think that the ability to access almost any question we have at the hands of our fingertips make us the smartest generation.
There are great benefits from the use of the internet. We can connect across the world and share different views and ideas. Education is enhanced and independent studies are greatly improved. I believe the internet is a great tool if used wisely.

The internet poses many new problems that challenge our generation. I believe it is absolutely essential for us to be watchful on our usage time of the internet. The internet has great negative effects to adolescents when used in excessive amounts. I fear that most adolescents use the internet and technology too much. The internet could be the biggest challenge that this generation will face.

Gap Identification

Throughout my research I was unable to see if teens are aware of this issue. Also, there was no representation of their views on this rising issue. During my research I was unable to find any studies that show how adolescents feel towards the issue. Adolescents have a key view on this issue as it specifically retains to them. I plan to eliminate this gap by surveying adolescents on how they feel about this issue; more specifically I plan to survey Norton residents. By learning adolescents’ views on this issue, we can create a system that is more adept to them.

Research Question

How do adolescents feel about this issue, or do they even believe there is an issue?

Methodology

I plan to survey 10-15 adolescents and assess their viewpoints on my topic. Because my literature gap does not assess the viewpoints of adolescents on this issue, I plan to fill the gap using a survey. I will attempt to interview adolescents typically in the 7-17 age range. I will be gathering qualitative data as most questions are fairly open to an array of answers.

 Research Methods

I will gather my data through a survey of Norton adolescents. I will see their opinions on this rising issue. Using this survey that asks opinionated based questions I believe I can get a better understanding of the adolescents' viewpoints.
1.) How much time do you spend a day on electronics/internet?
2.) Do you feel that using electronics/internet for that amount of time is harmful to the health of adolescents?
3.) Do you think that the internet has many benefits from it?
4.) Do you think there should be a restriction on the use of electronics/internet on adolescents?
5.) Do you think the average American spends too much time on social media?
6.) What do you think is the greatest benefit of the internet?

Findings

In the first question the surveyors claimed they typically (8 out of 10) spent 5-7 hours on electronics. This lines up well with the research I have completed in my literature review. An astounding 90% of my surveyors felt that the amount of time spent on electronics/internet has played some effect in their development. Every single surveyor agreed that the internet has many great benefits and that the average American spends too much time on social media. The most common answer for question six was that news/communication is the greatest benefit from the internet.

Conclusion

I believe this research can help shed light and raise awareness to our generation of the dangers of getting too connected. As technology becomes a greater aspect of our everyday life we should be well aware of its effects on our generation. As the introduction and wide use of the internet could prove to be a great challenge for this generation.
